Have you ever wondered how Self-balancing Robots work? What is the dynamics involved? Yes, Self balancing two wheeled mobile Robots move faster compared to the legged humanoid robots as they have an in-built control system based on Gyroscope module. With the increasing popularity of MEMS accelerometer and gyroscope sensors for arduino motion sensing ,many are considering picking one up to kickstart their next project. So, why don’t we delve into understanding about the Accelerometer and gyroscope modules, here.
What is an Accelerometer?
An accelerometer is a tool that measures proper acceleration. Proper acceleration is the acceleration (the rate of change of velocity) of a body in its own instantaneous rest frame
What is a Gyroscope?
Using the key principles of angular momentum, the gyroscope helps indicate orientation. In comparison, the accelerometer measures linear acceleration based on vibration. The typical two-axis accelerometer gives users a direction of gravity in an aircraft, smartphone, car or other device
Here, let us understand in detail about the Accelerometer and Gyroscope module(i.e MPU6050)
MPU6050
MPU6050 is a Micro Electro-mechanical system (MEMS), it consists of a three-axis accelerometer and three-axis gyroscope. It is capable of processing nine-axis algorithms, it captures motion in the X, Y and Z axis at the same time. It helps us to measure velocity, orientation, acceleration, displacement and other motion-like feature .MPU6050 consists of a Digital Motion Processor (DMP), which has the property to solve complex calculations.
MPU6050 is basically a sensor for motion processing devices. It is the world’s first six dimension motions tracking device. It was designed for low cost and high performance smartphones, tablets and wearable. MPU6050 is used in different industrial projects and electronic devices to control and detect the 3-D motion of different objects.
Applications:
- Used in Drones/ Quadcopters as a direction controller.
- Used as an Orientation or Rotation Detector.
Used in Self-balancing robots. These robots are used in Surveillance & Transportation.
